insomniac

i have been wide awake since 3.30 this morning.  why?  i sure wish i knew.  i laid there for an hour just willing myself to go back to sleep, then finally got out of bed and came downstairs.  i usually have a little trouble falling asleep initially, never in the middle of the night, but for some reason, the second i woke up my mind went from 0 to 60 – thanksgiving, time with family, house projects, outings with friends, christmas shopping, christmas parties, vacation, yada, yada, yada.  i have absolutely no complaints about all this goodness, i think i’m just trying to strategize how i’m going to get it all done.  i want time spent with my favorite people to be quality, gifts i give to be thoughtful, the parties fun, the food i make tasty, our vacation special, christmas for beckett to be magical, etc, etc, etc. our days move quickly and they are full, but i know it can get it all done.  time to make a list (one of my favorite things to do – nerd alert!) and prioritize!

on a funnier note, beckett learned to unlock the iphone this weekend.  he purchased a groupon, unbeknownst to me until i received an e-mail about it.  hold your phones tightly people, this kid is clever.

miracle hair products

as i mentioned here, i am not at all talented when it comes to my hair.  i don’t have the patience to spend time on it, and it usually doesn’t turn out the way i envision.  that said, i rely on product to help my sorry skills.  i recently started using these from bumble and bumble, and they will forever stay a staple.  i use a dime to nickel-sized dollop of the styling creme on my roots, which gives me the lift i desperately need, and the surf spray adds some nice wave.  it’s great if i’m letting my hair air-dry and especially good if i diffused or curled my hair the day before – it does a great job at reviving it.  i spray it on when my hair is damp or dry.  the nice thing about this stuff is that you don’t need a lot, so it lasts a long time.  what are your hair secrets?  care to share?

who needs a kitchen island!?!

i had lunch with some of my old work buddies in the river market yesterday.  it was great to catch up and get the the lowdown on what’s changed since i left  the workforce – hello jeans day every day!  we went to a great little place called cafe al dente at 4th and delaware (i would like to recommend the offside sandwich – yum!).  after lunch, there i found myself in the river market with about an hour before nap time, so the short guy and i walked across the street to peruse one of my favorite antique shops.  i’ve talked about it here.  i came across this old school drafting table, and stopped in my tracks.  i think it would make a really awesome kitchen island.  keep the body just the same for a little industrial vibe, and redo the top with a hunk of butcher block or marble.  it would take up all the floor space of our current kitchen, but if it’s still there in a decade when we move, i’m going back for it!  i’ll take that stool too!

giddy up

well, the short guy begged to be a cowboy this year…or, we had a bunch of left over bandanas from his birthday and a new souvenir cowboy hat brought from the wall drug store.  i can’t remember which.  either way, he made a pretty cute little cowboy last night, even if he wasn’t in the smiling mood for the pictures.  in fact, recently, he’s adopted the ‘stunned’ look for the camera – not ideal, but i’ll take what i can get.  we borrowed some cowboy boots from a friend – thanks anna and remy!  they totally made the outfit, and had him walking like a real cowboy, which had us laughing so hard.  when the actual trick-or-treating started, he was so intrigued and watched each time as we went to the door.  otherwise, it was business as usual playing with his plethora of toys.

happy halloween!

happy halloween to you one and all!  hope you have something really fun planned – be it a wild costume party or handing out candy at your door.  my plans involve the latter and a chipotle burrito bowl, and i must say, i’m pretty excited about it.  i’ll leave you with a picture of our little chipotle burrito from last year.  my, how our little nugget has changed.

falling for fall

it has only just begun to feel like fall around here (no complaints from me!), so it hadn’t occurred to me to really do any fall decorating yet.  but this week has been cooler and halloween is in 3 days, so i think it’s about time i join the party.   i picked up a dozen pint-sized pumpkins earlier in the week at faulkner’s pumpkin farm, and while i love a nice orange pumpkin, i wanted to dress them up a bit, so off i went to hobby lobby for some gold spray paint.  i sprayed the bottoms first, let them dry for about 15 minutes, then flipped them and did the tops.  i let them dry fully overnight on some parchment paper, and scattered them around the house the next day.  i love they way they look so much that i think i could get in some trouble with my can of gold spray paint.

{here’s our mantle.  i still feel it looks a little bare, but i haven’t come up with anything else to add yet.  if you’ve got an idea, send it my way.  i’m picturing brightly colored ornaments replacing those pumpkins for christmastime. }

{on the dining room table}

{and a few on the kitchen table in a fun little missoni bowl}

happy fall!

these are a few of my favorite things

last night, i went to a ‘favorite things’ party.  i think the idea is brilliant, so i want to share it with you too.  it’s my friend meredith’s idea (kind of – or she read about it somewhere – but she brought it to our group, so i think it’s hers).  here’s the idea:  you buy three of your favorite things (all three the very same) at the agreed upon price point (ours was $5 – $10) and bring them to the party.  once you’re there, you write your name three times on little pieces of paper, and throw it in a bowl.  send the bowl around, and each person draws three names (making sure that your own is not one).  then you go around, each person explains why they love their favorite thing, and the three people whose names you’ve drawn get your favorite thing.  so you walk away with three new things!  it’s fun to see all the different stuff, and who doesn’t like going to a party and getting presents!?!  add food, wine, and good company, and you’re in for a fun night.  here were a few favorite things from last night.  click on each image for more info.

one gal brought pints of ice cream from here (sara, you’re right, the lime is heaven), and another brought cupcakes from here.

i want them all

have you seen this new textile line from caitlin wilson?  yes please, i’ll take all of it.  these would be super-cute in a sophisticated kids room, on a few pillows in your den, or to recover your dining room chairs.

my idea is to give our headboard a face-lift with this one.  the floral would balance well with the more geometric patterns we have happening in there already.

i love me a good chevron, and in the perfect color of greige.

having a green moment with these next two.

all of her stuff is youthful, fresh, and interesting.  check it out.

the century club

i think the century club is some kind of drinking game, but we’ll leave that for the co-eds.  we did make a trip back to college this past weekend, and it was to celebrate a century of mizzou homecomings.  did you know that homecoming started at the university of missouri?  kind of a cool claim to fame i think.  we did a little tailgating (i.e. walked two miles before the game even started) and sat on ‘the hill’ for the game – it always feels good to be back in a sea of black and gold.  the weather was a.m.a.z.i.n.g., we saw lots of our good ol’ pals and even had time for a walk through campus.  it has changed so much since we’ve been there, and i’m jealous of all the cool stuff the students now have.  i’m pretty sure the journalism school has it’s own color printer now – something we did not have when i was there!  seriously – a journalism school without a color printer!?!  anywho, it was a great visit to columbia, and i always leave wishing we had had more time to spend there.

{this guy is serious…about football}

you might think that this scene took place in the wee hours of the morning.  the reality is that we’re old, it was 10.00, and we went back to our hotel right after.  my, how times have changed.

isla {newborn}

my good friend colleen asked me to take pictures of her brand new baby last week.  not only is she just beautiful, but she has a really good name too – isla.  isn’t that so pretty?  we had a great time oooing and ahhing over how cute she looked, and i was crawling all over the floor of their new house to get just the right angle on this amazingly adorable face.  thanks colleen, for letting capture a few sweet newborn moments for isla.  here are a few of my favorites from the day.
