cleaning up

january really makes me want to organize, paint everything white, and start anew.  i’ve been busy the last few days trying to bring some order to a few places that have been…well, messy is an understatement.  yesterday, i spent about an hour collapsing boxes that we’ve been keeping in our basement.  said boxes have been there since we moved in (so over 5 years!), un-boxed big stuff for beckett (pack&play, etc.), or from the plethora of amazon shipments we get at christmastime.  i was sick of looking at them, so off they will go to recycle-land.  those recycle guys are really going to hate me tomorrow.  while the basement is still packed with stuff (mostly baby {nearly 3 tubs full of outgrown clothes} and christmas decor), it does feel a bit less cluttered.  a small win.

my other little project, i saw on pinterest (of course), and the only thing i required to get it done was a tension rod to the tune of $5.  i set out to do this on sunday, but found that we had a leak under the sink – oh joy.  why is it when you want to do something simple, it always gets complicated.  the plumber has come and gone, and so i got to work.  now the cleaning products under the sink are lifted up, leaving more room in the tubs to corral the other little stuff.  another small win, but add on a trip to goodwill to unload some old clothes, and i’d say the house is feeling a little lighter.  next area, the office closet.  yikes.  i am dreading taking that one on.

before – full disclosure here.  please say i’m not the only one with a place like this!?!

oh, good lord, that was bad.  and after…

yippee!  such a mundane thing, but i feel compelled to pass along clever ideas that other people think of.  :)

on my nightstand

i really do love reading, but my gusto for it is a bit cyclical.  right now, i’m on a little kick and my list is long, so i hope to keep up the momentum and keep the nightly tradition of reading a permanent one.  It’s a nice transition from a busy day into dream land.  i’m usually into reading what i call mind candy – basically a fun little novel – but i’ve added a few ‘real’ books to the queue that i’ve heard some good things about.  here’s what’s on my nightstand.

1.  i just finished up the girl with the dragon tattoo last night.  i thought it was really good, but it does have some pretty intense parts and ‘adult’ subject matter, if. ya. know. what. i. mean.  there are two more books that follow it, and once jared is done with them, they’ll move from his nightstand to mine.

2.  next up for me is in defense of food, which i’m pretty excited to read.  i think the experience of having been pregnant and then wanting to start beckett off on the right foot nutritionally has made me so much more conscious of what goes into our bodies.  if i’m making sure he has a good serving of veg at lunch and dinner, why am i not doing the same for myself?  and other questions like that.

3.  the hunger games – i just have to see what all the fuss is about, and i’ll read all three eventually.

4.  the octopus and the orangutan:  more true tales of animal intrigue, intelligence, and ingenuity – my dad was telling some stories from this book and it really peaked my interest.

i’m always adding to my list, so if you have a recommendation pass it along!

favorite things: baby edition

since i have babies on the brain, and i have a ton of friends who are either pregnant or thinking about it, i thought i’d share some of my very favorite baby items.

but before we get to that, a little side note.  i think there might have been a little confusion about the picture of jared and me in my last post.  that is not me right now.  that is when i was 9 months pregnant with b – i mean, he came out 14 days later.  if i looked that way right now, i would be scared that i’m gestating an elephant.

ok, on to the baby stuff.  a fair warning that this is a little long.

moby wrap – i think this wrap is perfect for the tee tiny baby.  it is super soft and holds that sweet baby so close.  i am a huge fan of baby-carrying.  i loved having beckett so close to me, particularly when he was brand new.  i would like to recommend black since it will disguise a complete blowout diaper, as i experienced while standing in the middle of the bloch building of the nelson-atkins museum.

ergobaby carrier – i love, love, love this carrier for the bigger baby – maybe 6m and up?  you can use it as a front pack, on the hip, or a backpack.  i was still using this with beckett as recently as this spring.  unlike a lot of carriers, it has great shoulder padding and has a strap for your hips to help distribute your kiddo’s weight.  it is super comfortable, even for long periods of time.  it’s also great for traveling through airports instead of hauling a huge stroller (unless you’ll need one on the other end).  their website says you can use this with a child up to 45 pounds, but if your kid is that heavy, i say they need to be using their own two feet.

boon highchair – this highchair is a bit on the pricey side, but we decided if we were going to have to look at it every day, we wanted it to look cool.  kind of vain, right?  well, it has actually turned out to be great.  this puppy is super easy to wipe down, and the seat is right at miller-height so he can lick out everything beckett’s mouth missed – hey, i’m just bein’ real.  we actually ended up taking out the orange cushion all-together to make it even easier to clean.  the one downside is that the tray is a little small in comparison to other chairs out there, but i would still buy it again.

aden & anais swaddling blankets – pretty much every mama i know has one or ten of these.  they are the perfect lightweight blanket for swaddling, laying baby on the floor, or using as a nursing cover.  now that b is older, it has morphed into a security blanket, and beckett sleeps with three…of course.  these are a great gift if you know of any parents-to-be.  i’m adding this bright collection to my own wish list.

bumgenius cloth diapers – cloth diapering isn’t for everyone, and i definitely had to talk jared into this one.  the main reason we did this is that we saw how much trash we were producing, just with diapers – it was amazing, and not in a good way.  it has been so much easier than we could have ever expected, and we are so happy that we took this route.  i recommend the snaps as opposed to the velcro option.  ours have been washed hundreds of times and they still look brand new.  i’ve heard that the velcro doesn’t wear quite as well.

pottery barn hooded towels – these are so soft, and the characters are darling.  another great gift idea.

sleep sack – once baby is done with swaddling, but too little to throw a blanket on them, the sleep sack is a great transition.  it keeps them cozy, but they can’t get tangled up – genius.

and this card that i recently received from a great friend, is amazing.  it’s definitely going in a frame for the new baby’s room.

so what are your favorite baby items?  anything new out there that i need to add to my must-have list?

asos

have you discovered asos yet?  a friend turned me onto them, and i’m liking what i see.  it’s pretty inexpensive, and would be a great place to pick some of the trendy items for which you don’t want to spend too much.

a subtle animal print tee if you’re not into taking the trend too literally.

i think my mom-bag is wearing me out, considering i lug around books, diapers, animal crackers, etc. on a daily basis.  i am loving the idea of the oversized clutch – for night and day.

in my opinion, you can’t have too many belts.  a pretty skinny in mint.

loving the snood, by why in the heck do they call it that??  am i the only one who was addicted to the game, snood, in college?

and if you’re into channeling the royal wedding, the fascinator hat!  jess and christine – look out, i’m totally wearing this.  ;)

how pretty is this little number??

and for those of you who are breeding right now, they also carry cute maternity duds.  you’re not going to find this at the gap.

the dual purpose room

i really love the idea of a room that serves a few purposes – it’s just that much more that you can use the space you have.  you may have a small or large home, but i think you could swing this idea wherever you live.  here are a few clever ideas.

tucked in a pretty little armoire, you could hide this office just about anywhere.

{kids’ room/study}

wouldn’t it be great to go to bed surrounded by books?  like sleeping in the library!

{bedroom/library}

this is a custom made dining table whose top pops off to reveal a pool table.  what a great use of space.

spring fever

winter hasn’t even hit here yet (it’s nearly 60 today!), and already, i can’t wait for spring.  i walked into anthropologie yesterday, where i could probably spend the entire date looking at each and every home good and piece of clothing, and it felt so bright in there.  a few little pieces especially caught my eye in the home section.

{wouldn’t these be great as wine glasses?}

and i want these guys so bad for our play-room-in-the-making.

diy: art

i ran across this painting months ago, and i thought it was so simple and beautiful.  a perfect little statement for just about any room, so i kept it in the back of my mind until i came up with a place for it.

this gal has some really beautiful artwork in a ton of different color palettes, but art isn’t really something that’s on our list to invest in the moment – eventually, yes.    well, i got a wild hair and decided i’d try and do something similar myself – this is the little project i was telling you about yesterday.  jen’s work is on paper and framed, but i wanted to keep it as easy as possible (less room for error!) and picked up a few white canvases.  i got to work mixing, and started brushing on a few stripes (i did practice first).  i started with a tube of light blue but after some playing around, wanted a little more green – well, i didn’t have green paint, but i did have green food coloring.  fyi, it works.  i added the gold stripes last, and i love the little zing it added.  i also painted the edges gold to act as a frame and make it stand out a little from our white bookshelves.  they’re far from perfect and i’m not sure i’m totally sold on the new look, but i definitely love the paintings and i’ve got some ideas for the next time i play around with paint (you can expect nothing fancier than lines and circles!).  these are hanging on command strips, so when we’re sick of the ‘art on the shelves’ look, we can take them off without any damage.

book nook

i’ve been a bit out of whack this week trying to get our house back together.  we had new flooring installed on our entire first floor last week, and nothing was in it’s place.  slowly, i’ve been getting us back to normal.  the last of the christmas decorations came down today, and while i’m sad to see the season end, i didn’t mind getting the decorations packed up.

you might have heard me mention before that i kind of have a thing with bookshelves.  i am constantly rearranging the ones in our den – did it again during nap time yesterday – which means i’m always on the lookout for good ideas.  i think the secret is books + objects + a little space.  unless you’re going for a library look (which is awesome, but not really what i was aiming for), it’s important to see a little ‘negative space’ to let your eyes rest.  i also like the idea of adding a little art on the front of the shelving to break up the horizontal lines.  i’m cooking up something for our own shelves, and if it turns out any good, i’ll be sharing it soon.  in the meantime, a few photos that have given me inspiration lately, all via my pinterest.

i’m pretty sure those bookends are just bricks sprayed gold.  a rustic little touch.

a sweet little cave for curling up with book.

holy awesome wall o’ books.

we had a very special holiday season and i sure hope yours was too.  here’s to 2013!

perfectly imperfect

i hope that’s what our home is.  a dose of classic, a dose of vintage, a dose of quirky, and very lived-in.  i’m reading deborah needleman’s new book, and she writes about how a home should have personality and a sense of life, be appropriate for its inhabitants, and beautiful.  while, i haven’t read much yet, i love the sentiment, and it is beautifully illustrated.  she was the founding editor of domino, a brilliant shelter magazine that sadly folded a few years back – so sad i didn’t keep all those issues! – so i like to think that i’m just reading a continuation of good ol’ domino.

all her rooms have a sense of fun to them – whether that’s by color, pattern, or otherwise – but also a sense of practicality, like it works for the people who live there.

all images via pinterest.

if you’re short on storage in the bathroom, i love the idea of a bar tray like this.

what kid wouldn’t love these rooms!?!  love that there is a dose of sophistication as well as plenty of whimsy.

chevron floors!  fun element for a relaxed sun room.

the settee at the foot of this bed is amazing.  love those curves.

i think home should be a place where you can put your feet on the furniture…with your shoes off.  :)
