i’m back

jared and i went on a little vacation, just the two of us this past week.  it was great to have some down time (lots!), and i’m happy to report that i survived a week without the short guy.  i must admit the first 48 hours were a little mopey on my part, but after i slapped myself and remembered that i was in tropical paradise, things were on the up and up.  i hope to share some details of our vacay this week, but today i’m a little short on time, and thought i’d pass along a book recommendation – the help.  i’m probably just about the last person to read this, but i can’t say enough about it.  it’s a very touching book, and what it really comes down to is relationships among women.  no matter what color you are, what your interests may be, or where you’re from, we all have a few things in common.

turkey day recap

we had a great thanksgiving at my aunt and uncle’s house last week.  my brother and his wife made the trip in from denver, which was a treat, and family members here in kc were all in attendance.  i am kicking myself for not taking more pictures than i did, but i was distracted chasing a toddler in a brand new place.  at the end of the night, aunt nancy unveiled a few christmas decorations – it was our own little lighting ceremony.  who needs the plaza!?!

{there was potato peeling – the boys’ job}

{and gravy making – granny’s job}

{and football playing}

{and a little turkey with a pigskin}

saturday, we changed gears, and headed to arrowhead for the mu/ku game.  the first half was a nail-biter.  three interceptions – seriously franklin!?!  but the tigers came through in the second half and prevailed over the jayhawks.  i was so happy to spend the day with one of my dearest friends (and the most fashionable gal you’ll ever meet!), stacy, and chit-chat when the game got less intense.  honestly, it’s pretty impressive that we watched any of it.

{stacy and matt}

i know i look ridiculous, but it was cold!  and windy!  i was never so happy to have a hood!

small business saturday

have you guys heard about this??  it’s an awesome push to patronize small businesses.  november 26th, the saturday after thanksgiving (this saturday!), is the day to step into a local shop and buy something.  i love love love this idea.  while i am a huge fan of the ‘big ‘box’ and department stores, i also adore the charm and uniqueness that a mom and pop type of place adds to a city.  we need these guys to stick around, so get out there and spend some money!  you need to do some christmas shopping anyway.  :)

family self portraits

if you’re at all like me, you’re often behind the camera, which leaves you with a lot of pictures of your favorite people, but not a lot of pictures with you in them.  sad face for people like us.  i’m pretty sure that our families will want to look back in 20 years and laugh at our outfits and hair-dos just like they’re laughing at everyone else’s.  so let’s get in front of the camera!  i saw this article the other day (tagged from pinterest – you time-sucker you!) and thought it was worth sharing.  it’s a quick read and gives some ideas for what to do to take family self portraits.  get creative – put your camera on a stack of books or piece of furniture if you don’t have a tripod.  figure out that self-timer that you’ve been meaning to try, or go buy yourself a remote control (i have one, and it’s great).  i’m going to be making a bigger effort to make sure i’m documented (even if i’m doing it myself), and i think you should too.  let’s get in these pictures people!

i broke out my trusty remote last week and balanced my camera on the corner of beckett’s crib.  we read to him before his naps and at bedtime in his room, and i wanted to capture that time together.

then, last weekend, beckett was being snuggly and still, which never happens, so out came the camera and remote again on our lazy saturday morning.

the pictures aren’t perfect, but i captured a few special moments, and that’s good enough for me.

distressed…in a good way

i bought these jeans about a year ago, and soon after, realized they were lighter than i really wanted them to be, so i stopped wearing them.  oops.  so, recently i came up with the idea to distress them.  i didn’t really have much to lose.

i found this picture to try to duplicate – i think it’s from j. crew – and went to work.

off  to the kitchen to break out my micro-plane – the thing you make lemon zest with.  stay with me here, i know it sounds a little crazy.  you could probably also use a pumice stone, steel brush, or heck maybe a cheese grater – just something with some grit.

i stuck my hand inside the jeans, the heel of my hand on the place i wanted to distress.  i stabilized the other side of the jeans with my knee to make sure they were taut.  then i just ran the micro plane back and forth until i was happy with the amount of distress.  i did the same thing in a few other places on the leg and pockets in the front and back.

ta da!  i don’t even know if distressed jeans are cool right now, but i like these a heck of a lot better than i did before.

insomniac

i have been wide awake since 3.30 this morning.  why?  i sure wish i knew.  i laid there for an hour just willing myself to go back to sleep, then finally got out of bed and came downstairs.  i usually have a little trouble falling asleep initially, never in the middle of the night, but for some reason, the second i woke up my mind went from 0 to 60 – thanksgiving, time with family, house projects, outings with friends, christmas shopping, christmas parties, vacation, yada, yada, yada.  i have absolutely no complaints about all this goodness, i think i’m just trying to strategize how i’m going to get it all done.  i want time spent with my favorite people to be quality, gifts i give to be thoughtful, the parties fun, the food i make tasty, our vacation special, christmas for beckett to be magical, etc, etc, etc. our days move quickly and they are full, but i know it can get it all done.  time to make a list (one of my favorite things to do – nerd alert!) and prioritize!

on a funnier note, beckett learned to unlock the iphone this weekend.  he purchased a groupon, unbeknownst to me until i received an e-mail about it.  hold your phones tightly people, this kid is clever.

these are a few of my favorite things

last night, i went to a ‘favorite things’ party.  i think the idea is brilliant, so i want to share it with you too.  it’s my friend meredith’s idea (kind of – or she read about it somewhere – but she brought it to our group, so i think it’s hers).  here’s the idea:  you buy three of your favorite things (all three the very same) at the agreed upon price point (ours was $5 – $10) and bring them to the party.  once you’re there, you write your name three times on little pieces of paper, and throw it in a bowl.  send the bowl around, and each person draws three names (making sure that your own is not one).  then you go around, each person explains why they love their favorite thing, and the three people whose names you’ve drawn get your favorite thing.  so you walk away with three new things!  it’s fun to see all the different stuff, and who doesn’t like going to a party and getting presents!?!  add food, wine, and good company, and you’re in for a fun night.  here were a few favorite things from last night.  click on each image for more info.

one gal brought pints of ice cream from here (sara, you’re right, the lime is heaven), and another brought cupcakes from here.

how to: coffee table to ottoman

ok, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of turning a regular old coffee table into a padded ottoman.  it really is a fairly easy project, but i would definitely recommend you wrangle someone to help you.  it’s so much faster and easier with help!  i am blessed to have two amazing parents, who are game for anything and always willing to help me with my little (or big) projects.  my dad tackled play time, nap time, and lunch time with beckett while my mom helped me tackle the table.  it takes a village!
what you’ll need:
  • coffee table
  • spray adhesive
  • staple gun
  • scissors
  • foam (i used two twin egg crates for beds)
  • fabric (i used 1 1/2 yards for a table 36×40 – make sure you account for the depth of the foam)
we set up our ‘workshop’ in the backyard, so we would have plenty of room to spread out.  we started by coating the top of the table with spray adhesive, and slapping on the first egg crate.  this is the can we had on hand.
here’s the deal on the egg crate:  i looked for high density foam at joann’s, but they were out of the size i needed, and that stuff costs a small fortune.  i thought egg crates would achieve the same look and they were about half the price.  anyhow, first egg crate is on.  another layer of spray adhesive goes on the first egg crate, and egg crate #2 goes on top.  we ran a line of staples around the edges of the egg crates one layer at a time- pay attention to your corners – you don’t want them to look ripply.  we used both an electric and manual staple gun, but i actually preferred using the manual on this project.  we used this one.
{manual staple gun}
{mom hard at work – she liked the electric}
now, cut the extra foam (leave about an inch between the staple and the edge) so your fabric can lay as flat as possible.  now you’re ready for the exciting part – the fabric!  turn your table right side up and lay your fabric on top.  take the time to see how your fabric lines up and move it around until you are 100% happy with the way it’s going to look on top.  make sure you keep enough fabric on all sides to cover the foam entirely.  while it’s still right side up, and your fabric is laying just the way you want it, fold one side on the other, so right sides are facing each other, and another coat of spray adhesive goes on top of the foam.
{about to spray with adhesive – the fabric is folded on itself}
then, carefully lay the fabric on the foam, smoothing it out as you go – you don’t want any ripples!  now, once more around with the staple gun.  we folded the edge of the fabric to give it a cleaner look, and that way the staple has two layers of fabric to grab onto.  again, the corners are the tricky part.  we used the ‘easing’ method (kind of bunching the fabric) because the corners of the table are rounded.
cut any excess fabric – we only had excess on the corners.  now, you’re done with the hard part!!  the only thing left to do was to paint the legs.  i gave them two coats using paint that i had already used on another project.  in a few hours, they were completely dry, and the ottoman claimed it’s new spot in our den.
other fun things you could try:
  • tufting – this would require some preplanning, measuring, and drilling of holes before the foam goes on
  • nail heads around the perimeter – i would have done this if the table had more of an ‘apron’
  • trimming the bottom with grosgrain ribbon

put a little zip in your life

if you can sew a straight line, you can sew a pillow with a hidden zipper!   pinky swear.

i followed this great tutorial and turned out two pillows during one of becket’s naps last week.  they turned out great, and i’m wondering why it took me so long to do this.  i followed them up with two more, and now our couches are finally ‘dressed’.

my tips:

– take the time to pre-wash your fabric if you want to be able to launder the pillows after they’re complete.  i used lightweight upholstery fabric from premier prints and it weathered the wash and dry with flying colors.  not all fabric will, so just proceed with caution there – you may want to wash and dry a small piece first to see how your fabric will hold up.

– make sure you iron your fabric before you cut your squares and do the seams as you work and at the end – it’s worth the 5 extra minutes of work – and the tutorial will prompt you.

– my last bit of advice is to buy good inserts that you can keep for a long time.  i prefer down, and i picked mine up at nell hill’s.  my 16×16 inserts were $16, but i’ll probably have these forever, and all i have to do is whip up a new pillowcase when i get bored with these.  i’d say each pillowcase cost me about $5 between fabric and the zipper, which is a bargain in my book!

getting a hold on the house

i really thought that when i decided to be a stay at home mama that i would be able to maintain a clean house, put a great meal on the table every night, and have some free time.  i misjudged.  life with a kiddo is busy – everything takes longer than you think, and i find myself leaving little piles of papers or toys or shoes that i’ll come back to later – and later turns into a few days.

i like to think i’m a pretty organized person, a big time list-maker who also likes to check things off – sometimes i write down something i’ve already done just so i can put a nice little check beside it.  the mister might say that i have a few ‘monica’ tendencies when i go on a cleaning rampage.  so why can’t i keep this house consistently under control!?!  i’ve come to the realization that i just feel a bit overwhelmed.

with more kids in the future (no, not right now), i’ve decided i need to create a system for myself.  so, i’m going to institute a ‘chore of the day’ to (hopefully) help me feel less overwhelmed by it all.  i’ll assign myself a section of the house, or a certain task for each day, meaning we should consistently have a pretty clean abode – i can use beckett’s nap time for this.  i’m also, at the end of the day, going to do a 10 minute pick-up.  my mom put this into action when we were kids, and i hope to do it with beckett too.  you can do more than you think in 10 minutes, especially with help – “many hands make short work”, as my mom would say.

this is what i’m thinking:

monday:  bathrooms, grocery shop

tuesday:  living room

wednesday:  errands, vacuum

thursday:  kitchen – clean out frig and mop floor

friday:  dining room and family room

Saturday:  bedrooms

Sunday:  free day

here are a few helpful tools:  martha’s six things to do every day and weekly checklist.  another example of a chore lis for adults and a customizable chore chart for kids.

i think this will put me on the road to creating a little more order around here and not feeling consumed by it.  do you have any secrets to keeping your house a well-oiled machine?  do share!
