miller’s decorating skills

well, we learned the hard way that 9 hours in the basement is just a bit too long for our dear old dog.  i had some running around to do so i was away from home most of the day, and i came home to find the below exhibit of his handiwork.  though he’s 4, he clearly still has some puppy in him.  thanks miller!

thankfully it was just some big floor pillows that were sacrificed.  i texted my husband the picture, and he initially thought that the upholstered chair had been destroyed – let’s just say he was not complimentary about what miller had done with the place.  we’re all happy that it was just the pillows that perished.  this basement is one of our projects in progress, so it’ll make for a more exciting before and after now.  happy weekend!

prada

i ran across some photos from prada’s fall 2011 show this past week.  it’s hard to think about fall when i just want spring to arrive, but it’s fun to look forward in fashion.  not only did i find the clothes striking, but the footwear particularly caught my eye.  it looks like there might be a suede or leather ‘sock’ worn with a mary-jane, and they remind me a bit of spats.  maybe they could pull double duty as shoes and boots – the best of both worlds!  i love the contrast in color all around and the natural looking hair and make-up that balance out the clothes.

the drop-waist gives a nod to the 20’s…

add a little funk to your fall…

so prim and proper…

love this ladylike coat…

this peek makes me want to do a little more digging to see what’s in store for us this fall.

before and after – a quick project

so, i have been dying to give a facelift to a bookshelf we have under our TV.  we cut a hole out of the back of the piece to accommodate a few cables, and in doing it, the jigsaw got away from us…oops!  thus the terrible jagged hole – we had something covering it up, but i still thought about it and hated it (and i’m embarrassed to be sharing it, but there’s a happy ending!).  i saw bryn do this to a piece of furniture a few weeks ago – i love that it’s a super-easy fix, and if we hate it in a few months, it’s no big deal to change it up.  i’m already thinking an old map would be a cool change down the road.

half a cake for half a year

our sweet little man is 6 months old!  in honor of completing his first half-year, i made half a cake yesterday and we invited family over to help us celebrate.

we also attempted feeding beckett some rice cereal for the first time.  it was largely unsuccessful.  he was much more interested in the bowl than what was actually in it.  he is really close to sitting up on his own, and i think crawling will soon follow.  we need to childproof stat!

mama’s marinara

my husband is a self-proclaimed spaghetti connoisseur – and by that, i mean he ate it four nights a week when he was in law school.  hey, pasta and a jar of ragu is cheap, people!  shockingly, he still loves it.  that said, i wanted to make a more grown up version of his favorite meal and that led me to create this marinara recipe, which i must say, turned out pretty darn well.

mama’s marinara

1 – 2 T olive oil

1/2 small onion, chopped

1/2 red bell pepper, chopped

2 T dried oregano

4 T chopped fresh basil OR 2 T dried basil

2 cloves garlic

pinch crushed red pepper (can omit if you don’t like it spicy)

1 large can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1/2 can tomato paste

salt and pepper to taste

warm the olive oil over medium heat and saute the onion, red bell pepper, oregano, basil, garlic, and crushed red pepper until the onion and pepper soften a bit (10 – 15 min).  add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste and let simmer over low heat for 1 – 2 hours, stirring every once in a while.  a lot of times, i purchase pre-cooked meatballs (scimeca’s if you’re in kansas city) and add them after the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste – these impart a lot of great flavor to the sauce.

*update:  i have been adding about 1/4 c of carrot puree (steam some carrots and give them a whirl in the food processor) to this recipe.  you can’t really taste them, but it’s a great way to add another veggie.

outfit –> room

so, i was perusing spring clothes at gap.com (because i want spring to get here – BAD), and i saw this shirt, which reminded me of this fabric.  so then i thought, this outfit could turn into a pretty cool room. a little bit rock and roll and a little bit ladylike, all with a splash of lavender on the walls.  give the board a click to make it larger for your viewing pleasure.

threads to wear

i’m feeling a little under the weather today, so i decided that if i dressed up i would automatically feel better.  and by dress up, i mean get out of my standard leggings and t-shirt morning outfit and put on a shoe with a heel.  i think it’s working.  or maybe it’s the two cups of coffee.

pardon the terrible background.  i’ll do better next time.

whew!

we had an uber-productive weekend and barely sat down at all.  i honestly love weekends like that because the feeling of accomplishment is so darn good.  we’re re-swizzling our basement on a dime, so that we have both a gym area and a living space (in hopes that our main living room upstairs doesn’t become totally overrun with toys – i understand this is probably just wishful thinking).  the gym portion got finished (pics to come!), but the living area still needs a decent amount of work – freshening furniture and whatnot.  i told my dear husband that need it to look pretty in order for me to want to go down there – i don’t want it to look like a furniture graveyard.  more to come on that project later.

so after all our hard work, today i reward myself with this yummy recipe for lunch, which has fast become one of my favorites.  it’s quick and easy, and so so good.  thank you giada!

bathroom before and after

we remodeled our bathroom nearly two years ago, and i still love it every time i walk in.  our house was built in the 80s, when carpeted bathrooms and a separate little room for your shower and commode were cool.  we decided to join the 21st century and open her up and lay down some tile – well, not us, but some very capable people that we hired.  we were trying to get the work done before hosting 6 house guests, and surprisingly, it actually happened!  here are some before, during and after shots.
